Dean, 7 students booked on Madras High Court directive for ragging

Second year student in the college at Vellavedu was ragged and attacked by his seniors

Chennai: Tiruvallur police, on directives of Madras HC, have registered a case against the dean of a nautical and marine sciences college and seven students for alleged ragging of a second year student. Saravana Prabhu, a second year student in the college at Vellavedu in Tiruvallur district was ragged and attacked by his seniors on May 19.

When Prabhu objected to their behaviour, the students attacked him after which Prabhu was admitted at a private hospital in Poonamalee. Police said that Prabhu initially approached the college management with a complaint. When the management ignored him, Prabhu approached the court seeking legal action.

Based on the court’s directions, Police registered a case against college dean Mathew Jacob and the students Deenadayalan, Loganathan, Mangudi Rubesh, Srinath Paul, Dhanasekaran, Abishek and Dinesh Raj under IPC Sections 294 (b) (abusing), 323 (attacking with hands), 324 (attacking with stick), 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) read with Tamil Nadu (Prohibition) of Ragging Act, 1997.
