Will consider demand for commuter train for Bengaluru: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu

'We are aware of the demand and importance of a local train system to decongest developing cities'

Bengaluru: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday said that his ministry would look into the demand for a suburban railway (commuter train) system in the city.

Decision soon

After inaugurating a number of development works launched by the Railways in the state, he said, “A decision on commuter rail will be taken after discussions with railway and state government officials."

“We are aware of the demand and importance of a local train system to decongest developing cities. The Railway Ministry will take a decision after consulting with all the stakeholders,” he said.

‘Release funds’

Mr Prabhu urged the MPs to release money from their local development fund scheme for improving facilities at railway stations. “I thank those who have already assured funds to improve passenger amenities,” he said.

Union Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister Ananth Kumar said, “The city is facing traffic problems and commuter train is expected to ease the burden. The Railway Ministry should immediately ensure the implementation of the scheme.”
