Ministers jump to defend Sushma Swaraj

Ms Swaraj had acted in a “bona fide” manner and with “good intentions” - Arun Jaitley

New Delhi: Three top Union ministers — home minister Rajnath Singh, finance minister Arun Jaitley and surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari — came out in clear support of beleaguered external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj here on Tuesday.

While Mr Gadkari spoke from his residence, Mr Jaitley and Mr Singh defended her at a press meet to announce a financial package for Jammu and Kashmir. Mr Jaitley said Ms Swaraj had acted in a “bona fide” manner and with “good intentions” and the entire government and party were one on the issue.

Before addressing the press conference, Mr Jaitley, Mr Singh and Ms Swaraj had met in the home minister’s room at North Block and discussed the issue.

At the press conference, when asked to identify the “asteen ka saap” as alleged by BJP Darbhanga MP Kirti Azad as behind the entire issue, Mr Jaitley brushed aside the question.
