Kozhikode: The students of Laxmi Memorial Nursing College in Mangalore on Saturday protested against the apathy of the college authorities towards the MRSA infection among students, most of whom are from Kerala.
The college authorities agreed to sanction leave for the infected students for one week and took them off duty in the post-maternity ward, from where they got infected.
Karnataka Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader instructed the college management to take care of the infected students, including their treatment expenses, and directed the health department officials to monitor the situation.
The college authorities had allegedly covered up the issue even after hundreds of students were tested positive for MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
“The college wanted to cover up the issue as the first- year admissions have started. Instead of isolating and giving treatment, the students were forced to work along with other students which gradually led to the mass infection,” said a student from Kannur.
