Indian forces strike inside Myanmar

Sources said Myanmar Army was informed of the operation just before it started

New Delhi: Striking back in hot pursuit at rebels who killed 18 soldiers in Manipur last week, the Army’s elite special forces unit on Tuesday carried out surgical strikes deep inside neighbouring Myanmar, killing at least 15 to 20 insurgents of the groups believed to be responsible for the deadly ambush.

The strike was carried out by commandos on specific intelligence inputs in coordination with the Myanmar Army and other authorities, with the Indian Army saying “significant casualties” were inflicted on two militant groups, believed to be National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-Khaplang faction) and the Manipur-based Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).

Officially, though, the Army said the offensive “against two separate groups of militants” had taken place at two different locations “along the India-Myanmar border”.

Sources said the Myanmar Army was informed of the operation just before it started, with speculation that Indian Army commandos entered between 2-5 km into Myanmar territory. The Army is believed to have been aided by the Indian Air Force, backed by Mi-17 helicopters.
