Mario Saliwa succumbed to injuries on May 31

Mumbai: Former South African domestic cricketer Mario Saliwa, who was stabbed last weekend, succumbed to injuries on Sunday.

According to a report in ‘ESPNCricinfo’, 31-year-old cricketer passed away on May 31.

Lions coach Geoffrey Toyana once described Saliwa as "one of the most feared bowlers of his generation."

Cricket South Africa paid tribute to Saliwa. A media release from CSA said, “Cricket South Africa (CSA) has heard with profound shock of the tragic passing of Mario Saliwa at the age of 31 on Sunday, 31 May 2015.”

Saliwa played 29 first-class matches and 20 list A matches for Free State, KZN and Easterns between 2006 and 2010, added the media release.

“It is always tragic to see a young life being cut short in its prime,” commented CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat. “On behalf of the CSA family I extend our thoughts and condolences to his family, friends and cricketing colleagues.”
