Chief Minister Jayalalithaa orders Tamil Nadu to approach top court

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will soon approach the Supreme Court on the issue of Karnataka sewage entering Tamil Nadu through the Cauvery. News of the pollution being caused by Bengaluru civic bodies in the river has already created anuproar among TN politicians and environmentalists. On June 2, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, senior cabinet colleagues and top officials took stock of the river row exacerbated by this new intrusion by Karnataka, a government official said.

Opinions from legal experts are also awaited and the state is now preparing an affidavit to be presented before the National Green Tribunal as a petition filed by an advocate is pending, the official added. According to sources, senior ministers O. Panneerselvam, Natham, R. Viswanathan, Edappadi Palanisamy, P. Palnaniappan along with PWD secretary N.S. Palaniappan took part in the review meeting. Details on the flow of water and the new pollution levels were discussed, sources added.

Based on an article in the Deccan Chronicle, a Chennai-based advocate had moved NGT, with the next hearing posted for July 20. NGT has put chief secretary of Tamil Nadu, Gnanadesikan, on notice in the issue and the state through its chief secretary has sent an official communiqué to neighboring Karnataka.
