Rahul Gandhi to visit Tamil Nadu to take up cause of farmers

Congress vice-president's visit will be close on the heels of his campaign targeting BJP

Chennai: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will visit Tamil Nadu later this month to meet farmers and highlight their problems. His visit will be close on the heels of his campaign targeting the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre, in Punjab and Telangana. “Rahul Gandhi has accepted to tour the state and meet farmers following a plea made by the TNCC. Congress workers should make all efforts to make it a success,” a resolution passed to this effect at the TNCC executive here on Wednesday said.

The resolution, however, did not mention when the Congress leader would visit Tamil Nadu. But, sources said Rahul would visit the state later this month. The executive, which met under AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik and state chief E.V.K.S. Elangovan, alleged that the Centre and state governments “are hand-in-glove in taking steps inimical to farmers’ interests. The AIADMK government, by supporting the land bill, has earned the wrath of farmers”.

The party flayed the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for its anti-people approach and vowed to strive for a regime change in Tamil Nadu next year by galvanising people’s support against the “corrupt AIADMK government.” The party also condemned the “oppression by communal forces,” in IIT-Madras where a students study circle was de-recognised for violation of code of conduct for allegedly criticising Prime Minister Modi.
