Kerala Police finds no ragging proof in SAI suicide

The senior students (had) questioned them for having beer

ALAPPUZHA: The Crime Branch investigating the suicide pact of four junior trainee athletes at SAI centre at Punnamada here, which took a life, could not find any proof against their seniors.

The report submitted by the Crime Branch DySP Parthasarathy Pillai on Tuesday to the district police chief V Sureshkumar, who is monitoring the probe, says the statements of the survivors to the police and the magistrate were contradictory.

“They told the magistrate that they consumed beer but they brushed it under the carpet as investigation team took (their) statement(s). The senior students (had) questioned them for having beer. A case cannot be registered,” the report says.

Mr Pillai said the girls and their parents had levelled allegations that they were constantly being ragged by seniors and it led them to the extreme step.

“Nobody else in the SAI (endorsed them). Almost all athletes and officials were asked about it but we got no clue,” he said. “Subsequently, we reached a conclusion that the humiliation after being caught consuming beer red-handed played spoilsport”.

Mr Pillai said it was only a primary form of report submitted to the monitoring officer for vetting and it would take time to submit a detailed report in the court.

Meanwhile, the action council formed by parents, villagers and relatives of the four girls has decided to fast before SAI here on Wednesday. Its chairman Anil Bose alleged a high-level conspiracy to sabotage the inquiry.

Geetha, mother of the dead girl, had told the police that her daughter took the extreme step because of ragging.
