Chennai: Several key departments such as municipal administration and water supply, public works and highways which were lull without much activity in the last four months, are now hyper active. With the Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, clearing files and schemes for drinking water projects at a cost of over Rs800 crore spread across five districts in the last few days, the projects are now kickstarting in a phased manner. The highways department is involved in relaying roads in Chennai.

Projects worth over Rs 363 crore for drinking water augmentation was inaugurated by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday. The works will benefit more than 1,032 rural villages. Also, civic projects costing nearly Rs 30 crore to benefit Tirupur, Dharmapuri and Nagapttinam are now being implemented.They will be completed in two months.

Arterial Anna Salai here is now undergoing median repair work and the stretch between Saidapet and Spencer is to be relaid. Both the highways and the Chennai corporation are repairing city roads, said a Chennai corporation engineer adding that the civic body will float a series of tenders after the model code of conduct is off next month. The code had come into force with the announcement of bypoll in R.K.Nagar Assembly segment.

In the last one week, work on projects worth over Rs4000 crore had commenced. These included Rs2,000 crore for energy and Rs1,000 crore for supplying drinking water and providing civic infrastructure, a senior government official said.
