Bengaluru Metropolitan Planning Committee: Too little, too late

The CM never realised the need to bring all the agencies under one umbrella until it was time for BBMP elections

BENGALURU: Among many portfolios under his belt, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is also the Minister for Bengaluru city development. It’s surprising that the CM, who should have monitored the infrastructure development, never realised the need to bring all the agencies under one umbrella, until it was time for BBMP elections.

While the CM may have envisaged a committee for smoother functioning of the city, he seems to have forgotten that only last year did the state government notify rules for the Bengaluru Metropolitan Planning Committee (BMPC), that too, after the High Court imposed a 48-hour deadline. In fact, in June 2014, the High Court had even directed the government to hold elections to the BMPC.

The Metropolitan Planning Committee is mandated by the 74th Constitutional Amendment of 1992 and will be the nodal authority for all the development and planning in the city. As per the notified rules, the BMPC will be headed by the Chief Minister and ensure better co-ordination between different agencies of the government.
