'India is proud of its rich tradition of contribution to UN peacekeeping operations': Sushma Swaraj

India has contributed nearly 1,80,000 troops over the years to peacekeeping missions

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said that India is justifiably proud of its rich tradition of contribution to the UN peacekeeping operations towards the preservation of international peace and security.

"India has contributed nearly 1,80,000 troops over the years, the largest number from any country. 16O peacekeepers from India have sacrificed their lives while serving for the United Nations," she added in her message on UN International Day of Peacekeepers.

Swaraj said that she takes this opportunity to recall the cardinal principles of peacekeeping, which sustain it as a mechanism to maintain international peace and security, viz. consent of the parties, impartiality and non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate.

"These principles continue to be as relevant as ever today and central to the respect and regard that the Blue Helmets have earned for themselves," she added.

Swaraj further said, "As we commemorate the United Nations International Day of Peacekeepers on May 29, I would like to honour the brave men and women, who serve as peacekeepers selflessly in foreign lands, far away from their homes, to preserve international peace and security."

"This year, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. In this important year, the invaluable contribution made by UN Peacekeepers through the history of the organization should be well recognised," she added.

The External Affairs Minister saluted the professionalism, dedication and courage of men and women who have served in UN peacekeeping operations.

"I also pay solemn tribute to those who have laid down their lives for the cause of peace. In particular, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the 126 peacekeepers, including 2 peacekeepers from India, who made the supreme sacrifice in 2014," she said.
