Operation ‘Roam-Yos’ launched in Tappachabutra area

Hyderabad: After the success of the special drives in the old city by the south zone police against youngsters wandering on streets, the west zone police conducted a drive in Tappacha-butra and picked up about 45 youths who were found wandering on the streets. They were counselled in the presence of their parents and let off. Officials warned youngsters not to wander on the roads late in the night.
On Thursday between 1 am and 2 am, a special team from Tappachabutra police station conducted a drive at Ganga Bowli, Yousuf Nagar, Gudimal-kapur, L.K. Nagar, Joshi Wadi and Jirra. Youths who were found on the streets or racing bikes were detained.
“We informed their parents and in their presence the youths were counselled and let off. They took an oath to lead peaceful lives and not to engage in anti-social activities. Parents appreciated the programme taken up by the department,” said inspector B. Ravinder.
Citizens have expressed doubts about the law under which the police is detaining youths found walking down roads at night. “As per CrPC Section 41 we can intercept any person on the road who is found moving under suspicious circumstances. They can be also be taken into custody and bound over as a preventive measure. However, here it’s only creating awareness among youngsters. They are not arrested or taken to police stations,” said south zone additional DCP K. Babu Rao. Officials said no cases will be booked against youths caught during these special drives.
“Though there is no specific provision in such cases the youths are being counselled based on humanitarian grounds in the presence of their parents and let off. An oath is also administered to them. This is just a proactive step taken by us to prevent these youngsters from engaging in crimes,” said west zone DCP A. Venkateshwara Rao.
