Bypoll effect: No proposals for city at council meeting

Month's session ended 16 resolutions, all-pertaining to new postings and retirement

Chennai: With no new announcements, projects or fund allocation made at the Chennai corporation council meeting on Wednesday, this month’s session ended with just 16 resolutions, all-pertaining to new postings and retirement of staff members. Surprisingly, there was not much opposition from the DMK councillors too, except their usual boycott of the session for every monthly meeting.

Following the model code of conduct that came into effect from Tuesday evening with the Election Commission’s announcement of by-election to RK Nagar Assembly constituency, the two-and-a-half hour council meeting had no discussions for the betterment of the city. Expectations on the council meeting in May by party workers and the public were high, as this was the first meeting convened after J. Jayalalithaa became Chief Minister again.

Soon after the announcement by Chief Electoral Officer Sandeep Saxena about the by-election in R.K. Nagar constituency, the scene at Ripon Building corridors totally changed.A resolution included
getting the government order to create a new post assistant sports officer in the corporation forming regulations and renaming the ‘stadium officer’s post as ‘sports officer’.
