‘Making movies and missing Hyderabad’

Abhijeet Ghosh talks about his work in Hollywood and his love for Hyderabad

While he is on a high after The Spy Next Door - a short film about a novelist, who learns that her new neighbor who is a spy, producer Abhijeet Ghosh is not complaining that the film did not make it to Cannes this year. A producer of short films in Hollywood, Ghosh is a regular Hyderabadi who enjoys his Irani chai as much as any one else. And he is all set to send five films produced by him to Cannes in 2016 and to different film festivals.

“Hyderabad has spoiled me with its culinary delights. I miss the food all the time,” says the filmmaker who has also worked in Bollywood and has made five short films so far, including Like When We Were Together, In Freefall and The Spy Next Door.

A graduate of NIFT, Hyderabad, Ghosh was doing a lot of creative work after which he started working on small independent projects. He moved to Mumbai when he was 21. He began producing webisodes for nautanki.tv, then becoming an assistant director for Sachin Khote in Ugly Aur Pagli, also working with Bhavana and Sheetal Talwar where he “learnt about films as a process”.

Starting his own production company, Altergraph Studios, was the high point in his career. It got him attention from big banners like Yash Raj Films, allowing him to work in Badmaash Company.

After getting himself an MBA from London School of Business and Finance in 2013 he moved to San Francisco to study in the Academy of Arts University. Here, he had the opportunity to work under Diana Baker, who starred in Alfred Hitchcock movies. He has also worked with the likes of Jack Perez and Tim Boxell, which enriched his movie making understanding.

He wishes that his movies do the rounds at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals. “One only hopes these movies would have the desired impact but all depends on the final cut.” “No matter where I work, I always want to come to Hyderabad,” says the filmmaker. “I have been in the city since I was one and I would be nowhere else.”
