LDF rubbishes claims of CPI switch to UDF

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan took a dig at Mr Majeed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state secretaries of CPM and CPI on Monday lashed out at UDF leaders for spreading what they described as false stories of an LDF constituent planning to cross over to their camp.

The reactions came close on the heels of Muslim League general secretary K P A Majeed’s claim and KPCC vice-president M M Hassan’s statement that the CPI would not be part of the Opposition during the next Assembly elections.

At a press conference here, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan took a dig at Mr Majeed and said, “Faced with serious crisis, Majeed is moving around with a sack to get parties into the UDF fold. His statement reflects the pathetic plight of UDF”.

“He should remember that no one is interested in jumping into the UDF sack which has gaping holes”.

Referring to Majeed’s statement, CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran said everyone had the right to dream.

“It is wishful thinking on the part of UDF which has been discredited because of series of corruption allegations,” he added.

He said there was no political situation in the state which warranted CPI to join the UDF.

“CPI should not be made a scapegoat for unleashing such false propaganda aimed at saving UDF which is on the verge of disintegration,” he said.

He challenged Mr Majeed to name the LDF constituent which initiated talks with the UDF. Mr Rajendran said E T Mohammed Basheer's observation that the CPI was feeling suffocated in the LDF was incorrect.

"All constituents are comfortable in LDF,” he said. CPI national executive member Pannyan Raveendran said Majeed was living in a fool’s paradise and his statements did not merit a reply.

Meanwhile, Mr Majeed said he had not disclosed the name of the LDF constituent which was planning to cross over to UDF.
