15 school vehicles found unfit in Kanya Kumari district

District collector asks to stop operation of buses that do not comply with rules

Kanyakumari: Kanyakumari district collector, Sajjansingh R. Chavan ordered the cancellation of fitness certificate (FC) of 15 school vehicles as they did not satisfy the requirements as per the Tamil Nadu Motor vehicles (regulation and control of school buses) special rules-2012.

After carrying out an extensive inspection of around 240 vehicles belonging to 140 schools in the Marthandam region in Kanyakumari district along with the road transport officer, Murugan, motor vehicle inspectors and officials from the department of school education, the district collector strictly instructed that the school vehicles that do not comply with the rules should not be operated.

During the inspection, officials verified whether the 21 guidelines issued by the Madras high court including the size of the emergency doors, fire extinguishers, ensuring 23 types of medicines and consumables in the first aid box were complied with.The school managements too were instructed to appoint persons having a minimum of five years of driving experience as drivers and cleaners.

Earlier on May 17, in a similar inspection of school vehicles, 13 vehicles were ripped off of their fitness certificates. Further, the schools were informed to note the cell phone numbers and e-mail IDs of the respective schools at the back of the vehicles.
