No re-evaluation of answer paper, says Madras High Court

Court pointed out there was no scheme to re-evaluate and only re-totalling was permitted

Chennai: Pointing out that there was no scheme to re-evaluate answer sheets and only re-totalling was permitted, the Madras high court declined to direct the authorities to r-evaluate the answersheet of Tamil second paper, written by a girl student in the class 10 examination conducted in March 2014. “In the absence of any scheme or provision for revaluation of a mark sheet, this court cannot compel the authorities to act in a particular manner as desired by the petitioner. If this petition is allowed, then there is every possibility of other students knocking at the door of this court for a similar relief and the purpose of conducting board examinations will be defeated,” said Justice S. Vaidyanathan.

The judge dismissed a petition from P. Muthulagan, which sought a direction to the secretary, state board of school examination, and the joint director, directorate of government examination, to re-value the answersheet of Tamil second paper, written by his daughter M. Kaavya in the class 10 exam conducted in March 2014, furnish the key answer and also direct them to issue the marksheet to his daughter.

According to him, his daughter was awarded 87 marks in Tamil second paper and as she was not satisfied with the award of marks, he had immediately asked for re-totalling along with necessary payment. After publication of re-totalling result, since there was no change in her mark, her number did not appear in the subsequent notification.Thereafter, he got the answersheet of his daughter under the RTI Act, and found irregularities in allotment of marks to seven questions.

His daughter had been first rank-holder all along in the school and after this award of a lesser mark in Tamil second paper, she secured only 488 marks and she was not able to get a scholarship from the school, he added.
