60 sovereigns stolen from government staff house

Burglars entered through back door of the house and burgled the house

Chennai: Around 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs8,000 in cash were burgled from a state government employee’s residence in Chengalpet.The police said the inmates, Madan (45), a state government employee, left for Velankanni along with his wife, Jaya Rani (42), a schoolteacher, and their daughter, Julie. The family visited Velankanni church after Julie scored good marks in her SSLC examinations, the police said.

On Saturday, they returned to find that the burglar(s) entered by breaking through the backdoor of their first floor house on Kasi street. Their house owners lives on the ground floor. “The burglars climbed through the back of the house and gained entry through the balcony breaking open the door,” said a police officer, adding that the family claimed that 60 soveriegns of gold jewellery and Rs8,000 cash was missing. Sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts reached the scene of crime and collected evidence. The Chengalpet town police registered a case and are investigating.
