Public rescue abducted man

He was manager of finance firm that cheated depositors

Chennai: A 45-year-old senior manager of a private firm, allegedly abducted from MGR Nagar in a car, was rescued by residents of Neelankarai on East Coast Road on Saturday night. The rescued man was handed over to the police by the public, and was identified as Mohan Das.The police later said an investor who had deposited large amounts in a scam-hit Delhi-based finance firm, in which Mohan Das was working, had executed the kidnap, hoping to get back the amount.

The police said due to financial problems, the company owes large amounts of money to many investors and the CBI was probing the irregularities. Mohan Das, working in the Nesapakkam office of the financial firm, was kidnapped by a gang. He had given an appointment to an advocate who had sent a car to pick him up. But the pick up later turned into a kidnap, the police explained. When the vehicle reached Neelankarai on ECR, Mohan Das tried to escape, but was caught by the gang travelling with him. Sensing trouble, local residents intervened and rescued Mohan Das. The public managed to overpower Vinod Kumar, the driver of the car, who was arrested.

Mohan Das told the police that an advocate had called him up and sought an appointment with him. “On Saturday, a group of people, including the advocate, came in a car and abducted him. On the way they demanded Rs50 lakh as ransom,” said a police officer. Mohan Das reportedly told them he did not have any money and assured to hand over the jewels if they took him back home. The gang was not ready to let him go and refused to accept his offer.
