Lightning kills two fishermen at mid-sea

Sundaram, who got married only six months ago

Pudukkottai: Two fishermen were killed when lightning struck them at mid-sea, 6 nautical miles for Manalmelgudi shore, in Pudukkottai district on Saturday.

The police said Sundaram (27), Karuppaiah (32), Muniasamy (28) and Palanisamy (19) of Pudukkudi fishermen hamlet ventured into sea in a country boat and were on way to the shore after fishing when heavy rains accompanied by lightning struck them.

While Sundaram and Karuppaiah were grievously injured, the other two escaped unhurt. The two then brought back the injured fishermen to the shore and admitted them to a private hospital at Manalmelgudi.

Sundaram, who got married only six months ago and whose wife is now pregnant, was the first to succumb to his injuries.

Karuppaiah, who was undergoing treatment in the same hospital in a critical condition, died later in the evening.
