After 157 minutes of painful watch, Rebel ends with the director’s remark on whether every Indian would turn rebel against the ‘system’ one day. On the contrary, if audience is constantly made to watch a movie like Rebel, there is no doubt that they will definitely turn rebel against such film makers! Before talking about the disappointing Rebel, it is very hard to digest the fact that it is scripted and directed by none other than the ace director Mr Babu, who gave films like Muttina Hara, Bandhana and many more which not only brought him success but also earned him respect in Indian film fraternity.
In a desperate attempt to deliver a block-buster to boost his son’s acting career, the director has faltered very badly, in every aspect of the making. The movie is so fast paced that it can literally beat the star sprinter Usain Bolt, and with seconds to spare too.
This ‘preposterously’ made movie opens up with a high-level meeting chaired by prime minister who is being briefed by defence secretary (played by Suhasini) about a defence scam. There is no dearth of such shoddy and laughable scenes throughout. Even as defence secretary is being made a scapegoat in the scam, the protagonist (Adityaa), son of defence secretary, who is a NSG commando, makes an entry. While our brave hero fights terrorists, who have taken school children and a minister as hostage, inside the school, our ace director depicts the scenes with TV news channels airing the entire operation live. Imagine media being allowed to telecast a NSG commando operation live. Kudos!
That’s not all, the story shifts to Singapore, and by now the NSG commando is court-martialled for dishonoring the order of a higher officer, and sent to 6 months jail. But he manages to escape to Singapore, in search of those who are responsible for his mother’s plight. Not enough! His mother is killed by his own father, and the villain (defence minister played by Lohitashva), who is about to get arrested by the CBI in connection with the defence scam, dies in a mid-air plane crash. But, he surfaces in Singapore with a new look (all thanks to plastic surgery). Even if the entire film was shot using a high-end smart phone, the movie would have felt better for the eyes, ears, and for few sensitive lives. Oh! Forgot, there are two heroines too in the movie – Sanjjanaa Galrani, and Preethika Rao. This is simply Mr Babu’s worst ever!
