It’s one-man show: Sonia Gandhi

Congress chief says government is only for select few
New Delhi: Launching a frontal attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a combative Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday charged him with “belittling” the PM’s office, creating the “most centralised government” and announcing a bonanza for the corporate sector. Mrs Gandhi’s speeches at the CPP general body meeting and in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday revealed the strategy to attack Mr Modi and “expose” his government’s lapses as it will soon complete a year in office.
“The challenge to us is very clear. We are faced with government which assaults everything precious that India and the Congress stand for. We have to fight back,” she said.
Observing that the government and the PM were in “full campaign mode” as if the polls were not over, she said the PM announces grandiose schemes to grab headlines while the finance minister denies adequate funds.
She also drew attention to how 43 of 51 Bills had not been sent to the standing committees. Attacking the government’s style of functioning, she said, “It is no longer ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’, but a government of some people, by one person, for a select few.”
“The PM likes to talk of consensus. Yet, ignoring convention, this government acts with obstinate arrogance,” Mrs Gandhi said.
Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday night hosted a dinner for party MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha which was attended by Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders.
It was the first informal gathering of party leaders since Rahul came back on April 15 after his nearly two-month break from politics. Both the Congress President and the Vice- President were seen chatting with senior leaders throughout the one hour-long duration of the dinner.
