Bengaluru claim first win over East Bengal

Goals from Sean Rooney, Sunil Chhetri and Robin Singh sealed the victory
Bengaluru: Goals from Sean Rooney, Sunil Chhetri and Robin Singh saw Bengluru FC register their first ever win over East Bengal in the I-League encounter at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday. Armed with a slight tactical tweak, that saw Chhetri play a deeper role, a text book performance from the central defenders — who marked top scorer Ranti Martins out of the game- and a dominant display in goal by Lalthuammawia Ralte, the hosts added yet more steam to the title chase.
The win and Mohun Bagan’s slip up against Mumbai means that the Bengaluru side cut the latter’s lead to just one point albeit having played an extra match. The away side started brighter of the two and almost found themselves ahead in the fourth minute when Dudu Omagbemi stole in behind the defence and latched onto a poor back pass to Lalchhuanmawia only to see the ball smothered at his feet by an alert Ralte in goal.
East Bengal dominated possession throughout the game and often looked threatening when attacking at pace but John Johnson and Curtis Osano stood rock solid at the heart of defence.
