Take steps to control prices of pulses: S Ramadoss

Price of pulses had gone up by Rs 25 per kilogram
Chennai: PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss on Wednesday asked the state government to take steps to control the prices of pulses, which had gone up by Rs 25 per kilogram. “Prices of pulses have increased by up to Rs 25 per kilogram. Prices of other essential commodities, including sugar, have also gone up. “Traders warn that these prices will increase further in the coming weeks. This burden on common man is worrisome and the government can prevent and rectify the artificial demand created by hoarding of pulses,” Dr Ramadoss said in a statement.
The price of tur dal was Rs100 per kg last month. Now it is Rs125. Similarly, the price of black gram increased from Rs 90 to Rs 115 per kg. The price of Bengal gram increased from Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg. The prices of sugar and jaggery increased by Rs2 and Rs5 respectively. Garlic prices had gone up Rs40 per kg, he said. “People are already burdened by the increases in the electricity bill, milk prices, vegetables prices and the cost of petrol and diesel. These have made the life of the poor and the middle class people miserable. At this time the skyrocketing pulses prices is further crippling their budgets,” the PMK leader said.
Stating that decreased production and hoarding of pulses bought in large quantities through online trading are the major causes of the price rise, he said, “The deficit of pulses due to decreased production may not be preventable. “But government can prevent and rectify the artificial demand created by hoarding of pulses. It is condemnable that the government is not taking any measures to correct this.”
