Andhra University students walk for solidarity with Nepal

150 International students of AU marched with 43 Nepali students and collected money
Visakhapatnam: Avishek Thupa thought his friend Ramesh Gurung had already left for the US on Friday. So when the news of earthquake broke, Ramesh was the last reason for Avishek to worry about. Well, at least for a few hours till he learnt that all his kith and kin were safe except for Ramesh, who had rescheduled his journey to Sunday. And the exact moment the killer earthquake struck Nepal, Ramesh was climbing the historic nine story Dharahara Tower for religious gains.
“The entire tower collapsed. Ramesh could not make it,” said a visibly up-set Avishek, at the end of a fund collection rally orga-nised by the international students of Andhra University on Monday.
More than 150 international students of Andhra University marched with 43 Nepali students and collected money. With slogans, flags and banners, the students sought help from Vizagites on the Beach Road. The rally from AU International Hostel to Yoga Village, culminated with a candlelight vigil.
Ramesh wanted to go to the US for the last two years to be with his Bhutani wife, working there. “If only he had left a day before…,” said Avishek, unable to complete his sentence. “We have collected Rs 15,000 so far and the collection is on,” said Avishek.
Bibek Kumar Pandit, an MA final year student of Human Rights in AU, lost his friend Laxmi Gurung while talking to her over the phone.
