Man stays put on cell tower, asks PM to accord status
GUNTUR: The protest against refusal of special status to AP started in Guntur on Saturday. A person climbed a cell tower de-manding that special category status be acco-rded to AP. He stayed put on the tower for the six hours and further refused to step down.
Mamillapallai Sanjeev Rao, 30, a realtor belonging to Seetaramna-gar of Old Guntur climbed the big BSNL cell tower near Autonagar on the Guntur-Vijayawada main road at 11 am. He demanded the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accord special status to AP and announced that he will commit suicide by jumping from the tower if the government fails announce special status.
Meanwhile, traffic movement came to a standstill as local people blocked the busy Guntur-Vijayawada highway. As latest reports came in, the officials have been trying to pacify Sanjeev and are talking to him over phone.
Besides, the CPI activists also conducted a protest at Sankar Vilas Centre in Guntur. In another programme, as many as 500 women activists went to New Delhi under Chalo Delhi programme seeking special status.
In the beginning, loca-ls ignored Sanjeev's wa-rning, but he remained on the tower till eveni-ng. The locals informed to the police and Gunt-ur East MLA Md. Must-afa who rushed to the spot and appealed San-jeev to come down but in vain. Mr. Mustafa along with TD leaders Maddali Giridhar and others stayed for one hour at the tower trying to pacify Sanjeev but their efforts turned futile. Locals in large numbers rushed to the spot and squatted on the Guntur-Vijayawada road disrupting the vehicular traffic.
