IPL CSK vs KXIP: Ruthless Chennai crush Kings XI Punjab by 97 runs

CSK have lost just one of their five matches so far, KXIP have lost three

Chennai: The kings in yellow seldom disappoint their fans in their own backyard.A superb allround show gave them a crushing 97-run victory against the Kings XI Punjab on Saturday. Ravindra Jadeja 93 for 22) and Ashish Nehra (2 for 16) led a clinical attack which defended their 193-run target with aplomb, restricting their opponents to less than half their total at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.Earlier, aided by the clumsy fielding of Kings XI Punjab, opening royalty Brendon McCullum (66 off 44 balls) powered CSK to 192 for 3.

Though pacer Sandeep Sharma prevented CSK from racing past 200 by giving away only four runs in the final over, the 48-run stand off 28 balls between skipper M.S. Dhoni (41 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (18 not out) ensured that the home team had a massive total on the board.

Skipper George Bailey did surprise the CSK batsmen with his innovative bowling changes but his fielders let him down. Mitchell Johnson, who leaked 40 runs in four overs without a wicket, was the culprit-in-chief on the field as he dropped both McCullum and Raina when they were on 21 and 13 respectively

The Australian first spilled a McCullum skier off Anureet Singh at mid-off in the fifth over and it bled Bailey’s men. Raina who was dropped at mid-wicket couldn’t make the most out of the reprieve as he perished for 29.

With the exception of left-arm spinner Axar Patel, all other bowlers of Kings XI wilted under the McCullum assault. A soaring six off Johnson over square leg brought his 50 in 32 balls. The 66-run partnership in 7.3 overs between Raina and McCullum pushed Kings XI Punjab on to the back foot during the middle-phase of the innings.

Before the match started players offered tributes to the victims from today's earthquake in Nepal. It was indeed a sight to watch.
