Set up toll free line to report unauthorised buildings: Madras High Court

Advocate general submitted that a toll-free number would be advertised within a week
Chennai: The Madras high court directed the Chennai Corporation to set up a toll-free number immediately to receive complaints against unauthorised constructions in the city. The first bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, before whom a petition filed by social activist ‘Traffic’ K.R. Ramaswamy came up for hearing on Friday, passed the order.
The petitioner sought direction to initiate action against illegal constructions in the George Town area. In the last hearing, on December 18, 2014 the court had entrusted the task of identifying the buildings constructed in violation of the rules in George Town area to a committee presided over by a retired judge of high court, Justice S. Rajeswaran. The committee submitted its action taken report to the court on Friday.
After perusing the report, the bench suggested the setting up of a toll-free number to receive complaints on illegal construction and advertise the number to popularise it. Accepting the suggestion, the advocate general submitted that a toll-free number would be advertised within a week. Later, the bench posted the matter to July 10 for compliance.
