Simplicity is the key

The Gulatis’ spacious apartment in Begumpet

Having moved to Hyderabad 26 years ago, ex-Army personnel and former ADC to the Governor Rakesh Gulati, his wife Meena, son Sahil, daughter-in-law Priyanka and daughter Saloni live in a cosy home, tucked away in busy Begumpet. And the house reflects the family’s belief in simplicity and privacy.

While the 2,400 sq. ft home that is part of an old apartment, was bought 10 years ago, the Gulatis moved in one-and-a-half years back. “Sahil got married, so we wanted to move into a bigger home. Since our old home and our offices are in Begumpet and we didn’t want to travel much, we re-did the entire home and moved in,” says Rakesh, who adds that the home is actually a mix of two flats, which was quite a challenge for architects Pratiksha Prashant and Abhishek. “The other challenge in doing up a home in an old building is structural in nature, we cannot be very fancy while remodelling it,” says Pratiksha.

The Gulatis wanted a no-fuss home and the wall colours and the vitrified tiles reflect the same. The home has three bedrooms, with the fourth bedroom converted into a bar area. The living space is separated by a room divider, which leads into the dining area which further leads into another sitting area.

Most of the spaces are neatly divided with the clever use of dividers keeping in mind the privacy of each room, yet making sure that the home looks spacious. So much, that each bedroom is also hidden from the view of guests, especially Sahil and Priyanka’s room, which is behind the bar.

“Sahil needed his privacy, yet wanted to be connected with the entire apartment. So we achieved that by connecting the bar and seating area, through which you can reach his room and the entire home with a sliding door,” the architects explain.
