From humble beginnings to corridor of power: P Vijayan IPS

DIG P Vijayan honoured at hometown for unique projects

KOZHIKODE: Creating waves with a slew of unique projects aimed at making lives better, P. Vijayan IPS, who hails from the district, was always in the limelight. His priority was the people around him.

A popular national television news channel recently honoured Mr Vijayan, now DIG (Intelligence), with the ‘Indian of the Year’ award, selected through an online poll.

He was accorded a reception in his hometown by Malabar College of Optometry and Health students in connection with their annual cultural festival, ‘Zest 2015’.

“As a child, I didn’t enjoy school. Many of my friends were earning money working as construction labourers and I followed in their footsteps,” said Mr Vijayan told the youngsters. “There was nobody to guide me.”

A 1999 batch IPS officer, he feels the present generation is getting wider opportunities and possibilities to scale heights. He todl them it was the right time to work hard and get all that they need.

“The life of Narendra Modi from a ‘Chayvalla’ to PM and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam from a newspaper boy to President is just enough for one to get inspired and attain heights,” he said.

The college management managed to bring some of his friends and classmates also to the function.

“Talking to the man at the helm of a variety of projects being implemented by the State government, and you will realise why his efforts are turning out to be much talked about not just within the state but beyond Kerala’s boundaries too,” said Service Cooperative Bank president Ashokan P, one of his classmate.

“When most kids of his age were studying, Mr Vijayan was mostly working at the construction sites. Hence he’s a perfect model for the present generation”.
