Cops register case against IAS officer

Mohan collected Rs 50 lakh for MBBS seat
Chennai: The city police have registered a case against an IAS officer in connection with his alleged involvement in a cheating case in which he had allegedly collected of Rs 50 lakh from a doctor promising an MBBS seat for his daughter in 2013 in a private medical college.
Sleuths of Chennai city central crime branch booked V. Mohan Raj, IAS, presently working as deputy secretary in the transport department, and his aide Selvakumar, for cheating Dr M.A. Nizar Ahamed after receiving the amount promising to get an MBBS seat.
Sources said Dr Ahamed, a resident of Nungambakkam, gave Rs 50 lakh in instalments to Mohanraj, and Selvakumar of Dharmapuri, in July 2013, after they assured to get an MBBS seat for the his daughter Farin Farassia, within 15 days.
As even after many months they could not get the promised seat, doctor demanded they repay the money.
Because of persistent follow-up, the duo issued two cheques — both drawn for Rs 25 lakh each —from an account operated at SBI, Chepauk branch, in March 2014. However, both cheques bounced.
Following this, the doctor approached the Chennai city police in May 2014 with a complaint against the officer and sought police help to recover the money. He also claimed that his family was under constant threat from the duo.
He filed a similar petition with the Chief Minister’s special cell for recovery of the loss incurred by him. As there was no immediate response from the cops, the doctor had moved the Madras high court after which the court on March 27 asked the Chennai police to register a case. Following this, the police registered a case based on the doctor’s complaint dated May 5, 2014 and the FIR was registered on April 15, 2015.
