Hyderabad: In a surprise announcement, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao told health officials that twin towers would be constructed on the premises of the Osmania General Hospital and the old building of the Niloufer Hospital would be demolished to make way for a new building.
The Osmania Medical College at Koti will have a new building. He did not elaborate.
Mr Rao criticised health officers for lack of cleanliness in hospitals. He also pulled up the director of health and medical education, Dr P. Srinivas.
In his six-hour meeting, Mr Rao spent 45 minutes on the dismal sanitation at OGH. He asked why the old sanitation contractors were being continued if they were not working. “Why was no action taken against them,” he asked.
A senior officer said, “The issue of absenteeism in hospitals and teaching hospitals was taken up. The health secretary has been asked to ensure that doctors and professors work fulltime.”
Mr Rao also directed officials to appoint teaching faculty in colleges.
The Vaidya Vidhan Parishad will be scrapped and all hospitals will be brought under one umbrella. The 119 Assembly constituencies will have 100-bed hospitals and districts headquarters, 1,000-bed hospitals.
The capacity of OGH and Gandhi Hospital will be increased to 2000 beds. The services of 108 and 104 must be properly coordinated and the government must monitor it, Mr Rao said.
