Work on to make AP ‘hut-less’

Ambitious Project: State, Singapore board to work together

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government is soon going to tie up with Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) to implement its ambitious project of making AP a “hut-less” state.

The Chandrababu Naidu-led government has decided to construct 2.07 lakh new houses for rural and urban poor during the ensuing 2015-16 financial year. The estimated cost of the project is '897 crore.

Officials said Aadhaar seeding is being done to identify beneficiaries. “Aadhaar seeding will also help us remove the names people who have already got houses under the Indiramma scheme from the beneficiary list,” a senior official said.

Sources said Mr Naidu is keen to rope in Singapore’s HDB in housing projects to be taken up in the new capital city and also in the 13 districts of the state.

During review meetings, Mr Naidu had praised the success story of HDB’s innovative urban housing model — Punggol — which is meant for low-income groups.

“The Chief Minister is of the opinion that subsidised and low-cost, but eco-friendly and efficient, housing project should be taken up in Andhra Pradesh jointly by the AP government and Singapore’s HDB and also explore other public private partnership investment opportunities,” an official said.

What’s more, the CM had already discussed the plans to work with the Housing and Development Board on AP’s public housing programmes during his interaction with Singapore officials and with entrepreneurs during his visit to Davos.
