Congress upset over Kapil Sibal as TMC counsel

New Delhi: The AICC has virtually disapproved of the decision of party leader and former Union minister Kapil Sibal to represent the West Bengal government in the Supreme Court in the multi-crore Saradha scam and thus supported the West Bengal Congress’ stand on this issue.

“I fully endorse the views expressed by the West Bengal Congress,” said AICC general secretary in charge of party affairs in West Bengal C.P. Joshi on Wednesday. Joshi said he has conveyed the sentiments of the state Congress unit to the party high command.

The West Bengal Congress recently expressed objection to Sibal’s decision and thus made it clear that the Trinamool is its main political opponent in the state.

At the AICC briefing, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said Sibal, a prominent lawyer, should take note of the sentiments of the party unit in West Bengal.

State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday had said, “Sibal is a known face of the party and a former Union minister. He is representing the state government in the Saradha case in the Supreme Court. We feel bad.”

West Bengal and its ruling party, the Trinamool had moved the Supreme Court on Monday seeking a court-monitored CBI probe into the multi-crore Saradha scam, alleging that the agency was acting as an “instrument” of the Centre and targeting the ruling party leaders.
