16 students, 2 policemen injured in college union violence in West Bengal

Student wing of TMC and CPI(M) engaged in a scuffle in North Dinajpur district

Raiganj, West Bengal: Sixteen students and two policemen were injured in two separate cases of college student union election violence in North Dinajpur district on Monday.

Four students owing allegiance to AISF (the student wing of CPI) were injured on Monday when they were allegedly attacked by members of TMCP (student wing of Trinamool Congress) when they were walking in a procession along with former West Bengal minister Srikumar Mukherjee at Itahar in North Dinajpur district, police said.

The students were walking in a procession alleging that TMCP members did not allow other students to file nomination in the union election of Meghnand Saha College at Itahar, they said. The police said that the former minister Mukherjee was safe.

"The students of AISF were prevented from filing nomination for the college students union election," Mukherjee alleged.

He later went to Itahar police station and sat on a dharna demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

In a separate incident at Surendranath College in Raiganj, at least 12 students and two policemen were injured in a clash between members of TMCP and SFI and ABVP.
