Distributors want Rajinikanth to pay for 'Lingaa' loss

Theatre owners and leasers will be staging a one-day fast at Valluvar Kottam

Chennai: On Saturday, a group of film distributors, theatre owners and leasers who were involved in the release Rajinikanth-starrer film Lingaa will be staging a one-day fast at Valluvar Kottam demanding the superstar to compensate them for the losses they have suffered after the film bombed at the box office.

The organizers of the fast claim that they have suffered huge losses after purchasing screening rights for the film which they could not recover as the film has failed to generate revenue.

“We are in deep financial trouble and can be rescued only if Rajinikanth comes forward and bails us out of the situation,” said one of the organisers.

This is not the first time that theatre owners and distributors are seeking compensation for a big budget movie that flopped in Kollywood.

In 2002, when Rajinikanth’s home production Baba faced a similar fate at the box office, the veteran actor compensated the distributors and theatre owners a portion of their loss.

In 2013, when Vijay-starrer movie Thalaiva bom-bed at the box office, there was a similar protest resulting in Vijay compensating the distributors.
