500 Anti-KKNPP activists protest against plant

Protestors demanded a white paper on the money spent for the first two reactors at KKNPP

Tirunelveli: At the dawn of the new year on Thursday, about 500 anti-KKNPP activists, including women and children in the coastal hamlet of Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district stood in knee-deep sea in the dark for about an hour from 1.30 am to peacefully demonstrate their protest against the nuclear power plant. Udayakumar along with his close aides Muhilan and M P Jeyaraj and special invitees to the new year protest, Thiyagu, the leader of the Tamil National Liberation Movement and environmentalist Sundararajan of Poovulagin Nanbargal participated in the agitation in the Idinthakarai sea.

Speaking at the protest, Udayakumar demanded a white paper on the money spent for the first two reactors at KKNPP and called all like-minded political parties and social outfits to join the people of Idinthakarai against the expansion of KKNPP into a nuclear power park.Reacting to the commencement of commercial production in the first unit of KKNPP, Udayakumar said that it was a drama by officers of the department of nuclear energy so as to mislead people.

He challenged the KKNPP administration if it was ready to take an independent journalist group to see for themselves, developments in the 1000Mwe first unit.General secretary of the Tamil National Liberation Movement, Thiyagu suggested the creation of a people’s front against unmindful exploitation of natural resources in Tamil Nadu. ‘This should be our resolution in the English new year,’ said Thiyagu.
