Power project contract soon

Rs 10,000 crore Udangudi plant to help ease power situation

Chennai: Nearly 18 months after floating global tender for the 1,320 MW Udangudi Supercritical Thermal Power Project, the contract for the project is likely to be awarded in a couple of weeks. The tender for the Rs10,000 crore project was floated in April 2013 and four companies including BHEL and three Chinese took part in the bids. After rejecting bids of two Chinese companies SEPCO and SEPCO1, Tangedco has been negotiating with BHEL and TRISHE, a Chinese consortium for awarding the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract.

“Only BHEL and Chinese consortium Trishe are technically qualified in the bids. We are evaluating their bids,” said a senior Tangedco official. The official added that the government would take the final decision on the awarding of EPC contract in a couple of weeks. This year Tangedco had awarded EPC contracts for the 660 MW Ennore Thermal Power project to Lanco Infratech and the 2X660 MW Ennore SEZ Thermal Power Station to BHEL.

The state government has planned to add 3,300 through these three projects considering the future power demand.Besides, Tangedco has speeded up works on getting various approvals for the 1,600 MW Uppur Thermal Power project and 1,320 MW Kadaladi Power project in Ramanathapuram district. A Tangedco official said full-fledged team headed by executive engineer of civil wing has been formed for exclusively at field to carry out various works related to obtaining CRZ clearance, environmental clearance, land acquisition works for the two projects.“The 2X660 MW Kadaladi thermal power project will be taken up only if we are able to obtain various union ministries including environment and wildlife,” the official added.
