Two women held with Rs 4 crore narcotics at airport

The two were carrying a total of 20 kg ephedrine, a synthetic party drug

Chennai: Two women from Chennai, allegedly carrying Rs 4 crore worth narcotics substances and scheduled to travel to Kuala Lumpur via Colombo, were nabbed at Chennai airport by officials from the narcotics control bureau on Thursday night. Airport sources identified the arrested as Mallika Kumar, 50, of Avadi and Rajeshwari Palani, 64, from Washermenpet.

The two were carrying a total of 20 kg ephedrine, a synthetic party drug constituent, popular in nightclubs in south Asian countries.The women were scheduled to travel by tourist visa to Malaysia and were found carrying 20 tins of ‘milk’ powder. They were nabbed by the NCB officials just as they were getting ready to board the 9 pm flight to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. The two were carrying the drugs in their baggage.


On a tip-off, the NCB officials scanned all the 162 passengers scheduled to travel in the flight. Initially the duo said they were going to meet their relatives in Malaysia KL and that they were carrying the ‘milk powder’ for them. But when checked, it was found that they were carrying narcotics.The two women were given '10,000 for transporting the narcotics to Malaysia. The NCB officials are now on the look-out for the man who had given the drug to the two women.
