Two policemen show they too have a heart

Provide food, cloth to naked man lying outside hospital with swarming flies

Chennai: Dispelling the popular notion that men in khakhi aren’t capable of a little kindness or compassion, three policemen attached to the Anna Salai police station went out of the way to help an unconscious man, who was left for dead outside the Government Royappetah hospital early on Thursday, as the world celebrated Christmas.

The naked man, suspected to be in his early twenties, lay outside the hospital with flies swarming over his body at around 1.20 pm when head constable L. Ramalingam and his youth brigade member T.K. Jeeva spotted him.“We noticed that while many people noticed the man, they turned away and went about their business,” Ramalingam said.

“As the man failed to open his eyes, many people thought he was in an inebriated condition,” he explained. The two policemen poured water over him. When he opened the eyes, the cops managed to get a lungi for him. Later Ramalingam sought the help of his colleague T. Keeran to bring some food and energy drinks. As the man could not use his hands, the policemen even fed him idlis and gave him glucose water to drink.

“Once he had food and drink he started uttering some words. The man, though he spoke a few Telugu words, was not mentioning his name but claimed he was from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. We are trying to find out where he is from. We don’t think he is mentally challenged,” the police said.
