Foxconn shuts Chennai factory
Chennai: Employees of Taiwan-based contract manufacturer Foxconn India stag-ed a massive protest in front of the factory premises with the company advancing its plan to suspend operations in the Nokia SEZ unit at Sri-perumbudur by two days (December 22).
It had earlier announced to suspend operations at its Chennai facilities from December 24 following closure of Nokia plant, which was one of its major customers. But this morning, when the workers came for work, they saw a company notice asking them to stay away from work on Monday.
“Following continuous drop of business owing to lack of orders from our clients, we are unable to give regular work to about 850 employees for now. The company has also decided to give a paid leave following the talks with the unions,” the Foxconn management said.
“The company (Foxconn) has been saying that lack of business has forced to suspend operations, but apart from Nokia, it has got orders from other companies too. We do not want any more job losses and want the State government to intervene and sort out the issue,” said MLA and honorary president of Foxconn India Thozhila-largal Sangam A Sounde-rrajan.
