Current session of Parliament passes more Bills than in Budget Session

New Delhi: The Opposition parties might have disrupted Parliament several times during the Winter Session, but they have also helped the current session achieve a record performance in transaction of legislative business. The Lok Sabha has passed 13 legislations and the Rajya Sabha cleared nine so far in this session.

Parliamentary data available with this newspaper suggests that the legislative business transacted during the 15 sittings of the current Winter Session so far and the bills likely to be taken up during the remainder of the session of seven sittings will surpass by a wide margin the 12 bills passed during the Budget Session this year.

While the Lok Sabha has already passed 13 bills in the first three weeks of the session ending on Friday, the Rajya Sabha has cleared nine of them.

The Upper House saw the maximum disruptions, including a complete washout of proceedings during the second week due to the controversial remarks made by Union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.

“The data shows that Parliament can function effectively. The credit goes not just to the government but also to the Opposition. It shows that when the government and the Opposition function together in Parliament, then there can be record business as well,” parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said.

He also noted that the government always obliged the Opposition whenever the need arose and said he expected the same from them as well.
