Centre bent on abortions by midwives

The IMA has been opposing it right from the beginning

New delhi: Brushing aside opposition to its proposed legislation of allowing midwives to perform abortions, the health ministry has decided to take the draft Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Bill to the cabinet.

An umbrella body of Gynaecologists- (FOGSI) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have vehemently opposed the ministry’s decision of allowing homeopaths and midwives to terminate pregnancy saying that ‘abortions performed by them could pose a grave threat to women.

While the ministry officials say that FOGSI members were part of consultations and supported the amendments earlier, in their recent comments sent to the ministry, they have opposed the proposal.

The IMA has been opposing it right from the beginning and have even written to the Prime Minister asking for withdrawal of new amendments.
