Carol group attacked in Champapet

Saroornagar police started an investigation

Hyderabad: A gang allegedly attacked Christmas carolers in Champapet on Friday midnight. Singareni Colony Faith Baptist Church pastor Bhimudu Naik and two others were injured in the attack. While the victims alleged that a Hindu right wing group from the locality planned and carried out the assault, police said that it was a spontaneous clash when the carol team was passing by a wedding procession. Saroornagar police started an investigation following a complaint from the victims.

The carol team said when they were moving through Vaishalinagar at midnight around 30 people attacked them. Four members of the team including the pastor were beaten up severely by the gang. After the assault the gang left. “We took the injured to a hospital and approached the police,” said a member of the carol team.

However, police said the clash occurred after an argument with a wedding procession. “The argument turned into a clash and some people attacked the carol team. We think it was a spontaneous clash and not a planned one,” said Saroornagar inspector K. Narsing Rao.

The cops booked a case against the assaulters under Section 147 and 324 Nobody has been arrested so far in the case.

The condition of the victims is stable and they were given first aid at a hospital, police said.
