Microsoft to crack down on Windows and Office piracy

Microsoft will now start hounding those who are using pirated Windows and Office

Microsoft Windows and Office products have been pirated world-wide for a long time, and Microsoft does know about this. However, though many may think Microsoft will take it lightly, the Redmond company is now thinking the other way.

According to an article on Mobileburn, Torrent Freak reported that Microsoft is now planning on taking people to court, regarding the Microsoft piracy issue.

Microsoft will be monitoring from their end and will act accordingly when they find out that people are using pirated copies of the Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office.

The Software giant has apparently filed a complaint against a few persons who have activated Windows 7 and Office 10 on multiple occasions. Microsoft has a cyber-forensics unit, which has a task for rooting out any type of suspicious behaviour, which includes false product activations.

In the case filed, Microsoft says that there have been a number of product key registrations from a single IP address, which was tracked down to an AT&T internet user, as the IP address was allocated via the ISP.

The case filed states that multiple activations from a single location could be a possible piracy ring where the persons are activating the product without purchasing it. These would then be made available for online downloaders. The product could be from a batch of stolen goods from the Microsoft supply chain.

The report further states that, the Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, did discuss the topic of piracy a while ago and hinted that Microsoft is not too bothered about the piracy racket. However, he did suggest that the company would take necessary action against those found pirating the goods.

The complaint also points out, “One prominent form of software piracy is known as "hard-disk loading," which is the unauthorized copying and installation of infringing software on devices. Those devices are then sold in competition with, and often for lower prices than, devices pre-installed with legally licensed copies of software.”
