Kozhikode kiss protest today

The event is scheduled to be held today at 3 pm. Venue: New Bus stand, Kozhikode

Kozhikode: Six weeks after the October 23 ‘Down Town’ attack by Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the BJP, in the city, Kozhikode is getting ready for the ‘Kiss in the Street’ campaign against moral policing by saffron outfits.

The intelligence wing of the police is still groping in the dark for the identify of the organisers as apart from a Facebook page ‘Kiss in the Street,’ there is no clue about who is behind it.

Though the police claims it is not taking the campaign seriously, its intelligence wing is working round -the- clock to check the backgrounds of youngsters it believes could be responsible .

“All of us are from various walks of life and came together as a reaction to the issue on FB,” says Kiran Daniel, one of the organisers.

“Before this we were all total strangers. Some say there will be thousand of participants and others say there will be hundreds. Nobody knows the exact number,” adds Kiran, a visual communication student, who joined the movement as part of his interest in communication media.

Though the FB page says the campaign will be held at the busy ‘new bus stand’ what form it will take is not clear

‘Panmai,’ a transgender theatre group from Chennai, has joined the movement with a play ‘Colour of Trans.’

The group, which performed the play at various spots in Kozhikode on Saturday heralding the Kiss in the Street event, has decided to participate in it on Sunday.

Asked if any special security measures were being taken, city police commissioner, AV George said the police did not have details of the event as yet.

“I don’t know why they are not ready to come to the police to seek permission . We have forces ready in case of any emergency. But we will not act unless there is visible violation of law. It seems that some leftist elements are behind this,” he added.

What is worrying the police are the posters appearing in the name of Sree Rama Sene, a hardcore Hindutva outfit, against the campaign, in the city. Interestingly, an official says the police is planning to launch a new wing to follow “new generation of hippies” as behind every such event there are some “ long haired youth with a bushy beard.”
