Burdwan blast: Mastermind Shahnoor Alam arrested

He was remanded 14 days police custody by a district court & produced on Saturday

Guwahati: The key operative connected with the Burdwan blast case, Shahnoor Alam, alleged to be the leader of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror group in India, was arrested on Friday night by the special operation unit of the Assam police from Nalbari district with the help of an intelligence agency .

He was remanded to 14 days police custody by a district court where he was produced on Saturday.

Assam director-general of police Khagen Sarma told reporters that the arrest was a major breakthrough for the Assam police, which was also looking for at least four women activists who went for motivational training of jihadi groups in West Bengal.

Mr Sarma said Shahnoor Alom was running from one place to other for shelter and was finally caught from the Mukalmuah area of Nalbari district. Clarifying that Shahnoor Alom was also facing pressure from within the community, Mr Sarma said, “We have evidence that Shahnoor was chased by Muslim villagers while trying to organise a Ramzan namaz in Nalbari, Goalpara and Barpeta districts to motivate people to join him for jihad.”

The DGP said that Shahnoor had developed a very strong rapport with JMB leaders in Bangladesh and West Bengal and that they had organised some motivational camps in Assam but no camp for operational training.
