Green Building Panel, GCDA join to save water

The water wall will be opened to the public to make their creative sketches and messages

KOCHI: The Cochin chapter of the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) in partnership with Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is organising ‘Jalamayuram’, a water rally on December 6 at Marine Drive to create awareness on water conservation.

During the programme, a charter of plans on water conservation will be released based on which a series of water conservation initiatives would be taken up.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, GCDA chairman N. Venugopal said that the Authority had decided to partner with IGBC as part of its environment conservation programmes.

“Jalamayuram, the programme as part of the World Green Building Week observation, aims at creating awareness in society on ‘water as a life-giver’.

A water rally will be conducted in which more than 40 boats and yachts will participate. Apart from GCDA chairman, minister K. Babu, Mayor Tony Chammany and MLAs will participate in the event,” said B.R Ajit, chairman of IGBC, Cochin chapter.

Some of the major highlights of the programme are a water wall painting by noted artists, street play competition for college students, poster design competition for school students, and a campaign through social media.

Lalita Kala Academy chairman K.A Francis will inaugurate the water wall, a 50 feet long canvas, on which he will draw the first stroke followed by 12 noted artists painting on the theme of water. Later, the water wall will be opened to the public to make their creative sketches and messages.

A judging committee headed by K.L Mohana Varma will compile the ideas submitted on water conservation and water related problems faced by communities and the best compilation will be given a cash award.
