Winter 2014: Checkmate

Go a little creative crazy and team checks with polka dots, stripes and floral prints

Winter 2014 is “check”ing in. But the season’s stylebook declares that this year you cannot wear your checks solo. Instead, it’s time to go creative crazy with checks and team them up with a medley of patterns to form new alliances on the sartorial front.“Fashion needs to evolve with time. Checks are such an all-time favourite, if they are showing signs of flexibility, it’s great news,” says designer Neha Modi.

A play of checks and prints is what designer Shruti Bahl loves. “Lots of polka dots sharing space with fine checks in complimenting shades will create a beautiful psychedelic print effect. Settle for palazzo or go for crop tops in this pattern.” Listing her favourite style in checks, Neha Modi says, “I would love to wear my plaid frocks with poppy flower prints blooming on its Peter Pan collars and cuffs. Checks on stripes is another style that’s appealing go for shirts in mini checks in earthy tangerine shades accompanied with a striped jacket in charcoal hues. Match this with cigarette pants.”

Check pants are a hot trend this season. “Pair them with floral tops in bright shades and for some OTT glamour, go glitter happy with sequined tops in geometric patterns. Fine checks look feminine and very chic, opt for these prints instead of the bigger squares,” suggests Shruti. Preferring an all-checks tale with a little twist, designer Farheen Bushra Rehman likes playing checks against checks. She elaborates, “Place the prominent checks and the minute ones in a single frame, and stick to monochromes wear it as a dress, maybe a midi or a shirt dress. Not to forget a checkered background is perfect for figurative digital prints in a splash of colours on semi-deconstructed silhouettes.

Baroque prints and checks look great on shift dresses in rich hues like mustard, gold, crimson on a black background. If you are looking for some more versatility, embroidered and faux leather appliques also create a fine look on checkered designs.” Look beyond the regular styles, she suggests and adds, “Scottish checks are classic, but one can also add indigenous check designs that are woven in different parts of the country to add an Indian appeal.”
